DNS (Domain Name System) lookup is sometimes necessary in order to find out what the status is of a particular domain name or IP (Internet Protocol) address. Several types of information can be found by way of a DNS lookup or reverse lookup. A DNS lookup is one that involves the act of lookup up a domain name in order to find its corresponding IP address. The reverse of this lookup would be to take an IP address to find the corresponding domain name address.
Why A DNS Lookup May Be Needed There may be problems with a DNS server. Quite a few factors may contribute to these problems. For example, a certain DNS server may be down and a webmaster may not even realize it. Another reason that this type of lookup may be needed is to determine whether or not there are too many corrupt files are stored in the DNS cache (place where temporary files are stored). Looking up a DNS server can determined what type of action may need to be taken, such as switching to a more reputable server or clearing a browser cache. How DNS Lookups Are Performed A DNS lookup and reverse DNS lookup can be performed in a variety of ways. One of those ways is to use an official DNS searching tool. These are often provided for free on the Internet. Usually it is not necessary to download any software at all in order to test a DNS server. All it usually takes is to type in the name of a domain into a search bar (as mentioned in the previous paragraph). For DNS reverse lookups, the name of an IP address would be entered into a DNS search bar. Sometimes more complex DNS testing can be done as well. In this case, it is important to follow all the specific instructions given on a site that offers this more advanced testing. In fact, some websites show screenshots that will help a person learn how to set up a DNS server before or after it has been tested. More Extensive Dns Testing Software More specific testing is also made available to help you determine the strength of your DNS connection as well. An example of a DNS testing/troubleshooting tool is the DCDiag, which has been made available as of 2005 with Windows XP SP1. You may want to search for a new version of this software, or do more research on it to make sure it is the right testing software for you to use. Unlike other DNS tools, this one includes a downloadable file. Be careful where you would get this from, and again make sure that you find the most current version of this troubleshooting file. If you are looking for other types of DNS lookup or testing software you may want to perform a simple Google search in order to locate the right information. Tech websites may offer resources that will help you as well. |
