No one likes to be one who has let a domain expire. However, expired domain names can mean profit for the people investing in domains that have expired. The way it works is that an existing domain is not renewed for one reason or another. It could be that a domain expiration notification had not been received by the previous owner. Either that or one has been send and the previous owner disregarded it.
How To Buy An Expired Domain Expired domain names can be purchased usually through domain auctions or aftermarket listings. Usually these names are sold to the highest bidder, but they can also be market for a fixed price. Expired domains may be sold in other places besides domain auctions. Sometimes a minimal membership fee of about $4.00 per year is required to take advantage of expired domain auctions. Sometimes it may cost more than this to be allowed to bit on expired domain names. In some cases, however, bidding on domains is free, and all a person needs to do sometimes is register. You may want to search free classified ads on IT sites, individual domain name promotion websites, and web hosting websites. It is also possible that expired domains or soon-to-expire domains may be listed for sale on eBay. In fact, there are people who have made quite a bit of money auctioning off both new and existing domains on this site. The Benefit Of Using An Expired Domain The purchase of a recently expired domain can dramatically send traffic to your site. One of the simplest ways to make this site traffic work for you is to pick a domain name that is as closely related to the name of your existing website. Then, you can arrange to have that traffic redirected to your current site. There are even services that invest in expired domains just so they can send you the traffic from those sites. The more times a site has been visited the more profitable that expired domain would be for you. It is very easy to find expired domain names. Some of they are on sale for as low as a $1.00. However, they are usually awarded to the one who provides the best price. As mentioned earlier, domains may also just be sold for a flat fee. For instance, some domains are sold for $50.00, or even a few hundred dollars. Extremely popular domains that are now on the market may be sold for thousands of dollars. Beware Of Domain Name Look-Alikes Sometimes domain names are sold for much more than they are worth so beware. You may be offered what you think is a popular domain and find that it is one letter off from the “real thing”. This doesn’t mean that you would not profit from purchasing it. In fact, as long as it is not too similar to the original trademark of a popular domain you may be able to take advantage of it. Be careful which action you take, however. You also are fair warned that often domain names are sold that are stolen from someone else. You can read more articles regarding how this is possible. For now, however, you are encouraged to look up the validity of any soon-to-expire or just expired domain name in the Whois directory. |
